Measure Once: How to Measure Wall Mural for a Perfect Fit

For a made-to-measure wall mural, measure the full wall rectangle at several points and record the greatest width and greatest height. Do not deduct doors, windows, sockets or furniture unless the supplier explicitly requests a net printable area. Keep raw measurements separate from any stated trim allowance, document openings and focal-point risks, then approve the final crop and panel layout before production.

First Identify What You Are Ordering

A custom mural is normally scaled and cropped to one finished rectangle. Wallpaper sold by the roll is calculated from full-length drops, roll dimensions, pattern repeat and match type. Do not use a roll calculator for a made-to-size mural or an area-only calculation for repeat wallpaper.

Build a Measuring Kit

• Rigid metal tape or verified laser measure.
• Pencil and a clearly labelled wall sheet.

Record Raw Size Before Adding Allowance

Write the maximum raw size clearly, for example 3620 mm W × 2460 mm H, with the individual readings beneath it. Only after the raw record is complete should an allowance be applied. There is no universal extra suitable for every mural, supplier or installation method.

Worked example

• Width: 3608 mm top, 3620 mm centre, 3614 mm bottom → raw width 3620 mm.
• Height: 2452 mm left, 2460 mm centre, 2456 mm right → raw height 2460 mm.
• Raw wall rectangle: 3620 mm W × 2460 mm H.
• Final order input: follow the selected product’s current instructions; do not add an allowance twice.

Step 3: Map Openings Without Deducting Them

For a made-to-measure mural, keep the full bounding rectangle unless the supplier asks for net printable area. Record each door or window separately: distance from the left edge, distance from the lower boundary, opening width and opening height. Include the frame if the paper stops at its outer edge. Do not subtract sockets, switches or small fixtures; map them when they could cut important artwork.

Step 4: Document Furniture and Protected Zones

A bed, sofa, television, radiator, cabinet or headboard may hide a large part of the image even though it does not change the mural’s overall rectangle. Mark each footprint on the wall sketch. Identify protected zones for faces, text, arches, horizons, circles and other focal details that should remain visible.

Step 5: Measure Irregular Walls by Reference Edges

For a slope, gable, stair wall or stepped ceiling, begin with the maximum bounding rectangle. Then locate every change from fixed horizontal and vertical reference edges. Record where the slope begins, the height at each end and any offsets. Do not estimate a diagonal from a photograph.

For alcoves, bays and returns, measure each plane separately and label the order from left to right. A multi-wall wrap is not one long width unless the supplier confirms that the design will be produced as a continuous composition.

Bespoke and Custom-Image Projects Need More Than Two Numbers
