How to Avoid Harsh Reflections on Walls
Glare Is a Geometry Problem Before It Is a Colour Problem
A reflection becomes uncomfortable when a bright source or bright patch is directed toward the eye and stands out strongly from its surroundings. The same wall can look calm from one chair and glaring from another because the source–surface–viewer angle has changed. This is why photographs taken from a single position rarely describe the whole room.
Begin with a simple trace: stand at the affected viewpoint, identify the brightest patch, and determine which window or fitting creates it. Move sideways or switch off one source at a time. If the patch moves or disappears, the problem is directional. If the whole wall remains excessively bright, the issue is more likely overall luminance, finish or contrast.
Specular and Diffuse Reflection Behave Differently
A smoother, higher-sheen surface tends to preserve a clearer image of the light source; this is specular reflection. A matte or microscopically irregular surface scatters reflected light across more directions, producing a broader and less defined highlight. Matte does not mean that light simply disappears. It means the reflected energy is distributed differently.
A broad diffuse reflection can still be uncomfortable when the source is intense or the surrounding room is much darker. Conversely, a satin or metallic-looking detail may be comfortable when its reflection is directed away from normal viewpoints. Surface finish matters, but geometry and contrast decide whether that finish becomes glare.
Separate Sheen From Printed Texture
Printed marble veining, brushed metal, plaster marks or fabric grain can suggest material depth without creating the same physical reflection as the material depicted. A printed metallic effect on a matte substrate may look luminous through colour contrast while producing little mirror-like reflection.

Evaluate the real sample under the intended light rather than inferring behaviour from the artwork name or screen image.
Control Artificial Light at the Source
Aim adjustable luminaires so their strongest beam does not strike the wall at an angle that reflects into the primary seated or standing positions. Wall washers should create an even gradient rather than a row of hot spots. Diffusers, wider beam angles and several lower-output sources often produce a more comfortable field than one intense fitting.
Check the luminaire itself as well as the wall. A bare lamp, visible LED point or bright linear strip may cause direct glare even when the wall finish is appropriate. Shielding the source, recessing it from the normal sight line or choosing better optical control can solve a problem that changing the wallpaper would not.
Daylight Changes by Hour and Season
Direct sun can create a moving high-luminance patch, while bright sky light produces a softer but sustained reflection. Side light reveals surface variation; frontal light can flatten texture yet create a brighter field. Test morning, midday and late-afternoon conditions, and repeat when seasonal sun angles differ materially.
Use blinds, sheer curtains, external shading or selective solar control to manage the troublesome period without permanently dimming the room. The objective is not to eliminate daylight, but to reduce the source intensity or redirect it before it reaches the critical wall and viewpoint.
Contrast Can Make a Moderate Reflection Feel Harsh
A highlight is more conspicuous against a dark wall or in a dim room because the eye must adapt across a wider luminance range. When comparing Dark wallpaper designs, look for artwork that controls the size and placement of its brightest details. Dark, glossy surfaces can show crisp reflected sources even when they do not make the room brighter overall. On pale walls, the same source may create a larger but lower-contrast patch.
Balance the field rather than treating the wall alone. Raise gentle ambient light, reduce an over-bright accent, simplify reflective décor near the wall or move a mirror that sends light into the viewing zone. Controlling the brightest and darkest points often improves comfort without changing the design.

Test the Wall at Full Scale
A small sample confirms finish and local reflection, but it cannot reproduce the geometry of a complete wall. Place the sample vertically at the intended location and observe it from the entrance, main seat, work surface and circulation path. Rotate or move the test light if the final fitting is adjustable.
For a mural, include the artwork’s value structure in the assessment. A pale focal area may coincide with the strongest beam and become disproportionately bright; examples in the Light wallpaper collection are useful for judging whether a soft value range remains comfortable in the actual room. A dark area may reveal a reflected lamp more clearly. Crop and focal placement therefore affect perceived glare even when the physical finish remains unchanged.
Common Mistakes
Choosing “matte” without testing. Matte reduces image-like reflection, but a powerful source or extreme contrast can still produce discomfort.
Reducing all light. A darker room can make one remaining highlight appear harsher because the luminance ratio increases.
Treating printed metallic colour as physical metal. Artwork can imply shine without sharing the reflection behaviour of foil or polished metal.
Testing only while standing. The critical reflection may appear from a lower seated viewpoint or while moving through the room.
Adding texture as a universal cure. Relief redistributes light but may create its own highlights and shadows under directional illumination.
Applying the Principle to Metallic-Looking Designs

Comfort Comes From a Controlled Relationship
Harsh reflection is rarely solved by one label such as smooth, textured, dark or matte. Diagnose the source, wall finish, incident angle, viewer position and surrounding luminance together. Change the source geometry first when possible; then refine diffusion, output, surface finish and contrast.
A successful wall does not need to eliminate reflection. It needs reflection that supports the composition without producing a distracting source image, moving hot spot or extreme contrast from the places where the room is actually used.
